Using Remote Desktop to access a workstation on a non-standard port

All information used to access your Network is 'secret', Company Private.  Anyone can use this information to penetrate your network security; please keep your connection information private.  Should you ever feel security has been compromised, contact your Network Administrator immediately.

In Windows XP, start the Remote Desktop Client by selecting Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications and selecting the Remote Desktop Connection applet.  This opens the Remote Desktop client shown below.  If your panel is smaller and showing fewer options, then click the Options button to expand the dialog.

RDC Logon

Feel free to explore the TABS for options that effect your remote session.
Display: lets you set color quality for viewing images on the remote system.
Local Resources: offers remote printing and accessing local drives from the remote PC.
Experience: makes turning off display of background images (speeds up access)

Your network support person will have provided the Computer:, User name:, and Password: for the remote workstation.  The Domain: name is not required, also, for security reasons, do not check the Save my password option box.

Note:  passwords are case sensitive and the Computer: name will be an IP Address (90.68.23.70)followed by a colon and port number (:3389).  ; Example  90.68.23.70:3389

Now, using the specific information provided by your Network Administrator, fill in the panel and click the Connect button to initiate the connection process.

If using Vista or XP Remote Desktop version 6, the following warning may be displayed.

RDP Warning

Just click Yes to continue.

Once connected, you may still need to logon to the remote workstation.
Don't forget to properly log off the remote computer when finished by clicking Start, Log Off button.

ADDITIONAL POINTS TO REMEMBER:

The entire remote session is contained within a Window on your desktop that can be minimized so you may access your local desktop and files.  It's easy to get confused, but the Remote session has a unique banner showing the remote computers's name or IP address.  If you accidently click the X and close the remote session window, just restart the session again.

Don't forget, If you simply X the window closed, programs on the remote computer will still be running.  When finished, you should close the programs on the remote desktop and log off to properly close the session.
