Who in your organization knows how to
restore files?
You Could be faithfully following a backup procedure that isn't backing
up anything!
How would you go about locating a single file within your backup library?
The only way to know if your backup actually works is to 'rename' a set of data files and then restore that data from your backup.

A Primer on what Data is. ( It may not be what you think.)
In order to discuss computer backup software and procedures, we first need to understand the difference between program executable files and
a program's data files. If you completely understand which Witch is which, then skip this section.
According to Daniel Webster; data is factual information used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation.
So data is not the calculator, it is the numbers the calculator uses in a calculation; and data is not your word processing program, but is the words you type to express thoughts and ideas. Data is the applications output or byproduct. Programs process or produce data. Your programs come on disk or CD and are installed onto your computer’s hard drive. The program itself is not considered to be data and your program files are usually referred to as executable files and DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files.
So when we backup a hard drive we can backup the Program executable files and DLLs, the Program's data files, or both the executable and data files.
After reading the above section, you should conclude the following as True:
- My word processing program is NOT data.
- The files my program creates are data.
- My letters, spreadsheets, and Photographs are data.
- My email program is NOT data.
- My email address list, mail messages and file attachments are data.
- Program configuration files (usually called Dat or INI files) are data.
Once you identify what is data, you need to identify where on your hard disk it is saved at. Do you know where your
Microsoft Outlook Address Book is located? How about all your
digital photographs, word processing files and
Excel spread sheet files. How about your Quick Books data file, do you know where it is located? I can tell you this much, they are not all in the Windows \My_Documents directory; so if you only backup that directory, your backup is going to let you down.
