Backup Dentrix

Backing up Dentrix is a good idea, either to burnable media or BackupRight. Otherwise, if you loose your data you will no longer have your patient data, custom templates, and Images Database.

How do I backup Dentrix to CD or DVD?

  • Step 1: Launch IDBAdmin from the Dentrix Program Folder.
  • Step 2: From the drop-down menu, select 'Export Database'.
  • Step 3: Click on the three blue dots that show up.
  • Step 4: Navigate to the location where you wish to save your backup file and enter a filename.
  • Step 5: Click "Run" at the top of the window to start the export process.
  • Step 6: Click "OK" and then "Close".
  • Step 7: You can now burn the exported database file to CD or DVD.
  • Step 8: In addition to the exported file, the "Data" folder within the Dentrix Program Folder should also be backed up.

If your using Image for Digital X-Ray, then don't forget to backup your Image SQL database files.  Image is a SQL Server database that is responsible for Indexing and Linking your Dentrix Digital X-Ray Image library to Dentrix patient data records.  If you loose this database, you'll have no way of knowing which X-Ray belongs to each patient record.  Backing up SQL Server database files requires either:
  1. Backup software that includes a module for backing up your SQL Server database files...
  2. (or) a SQL Server script that tells SQL Server Manager to backup the database to a file that can be captured by standard backup software.

Restoring a Dentrix backup from CD or DVD

  • Step 1: Launch IDBAdmin from the Dentrix Program Folder.
  • Step 2: Insert your backup CD or DVD.
  • Step 3: From the drop-down menu, select 'Restore Database'.
  • Step 4: Click on the three blue dots that show up.
  • Step 5: Navigate to the location where saved your backup file and click "Open".
  • Step 6: Once all users have closed Dentrix click "Run" from the top menu and then "Yes".
  • Step 7: Click 'OK'.
  • Step 8: From the drop-down menu, select "Initialize Database".
  • Step 7: Click 'Run'.
